Alstom to equip Melbourne trains with new communications system

Alstom has won a contract to install a new radio-based communications system on Melbourne’s suburban X’Trapolis trains.

Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) has commissioned Alstom to deliver a Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) for 74 trains and a further eight on order.

The new system, which is based on the GSM-R wireless communications standard, will replace the 25-year-old Urban Train Radio System (UTRS).

Bernard Joyce, managing director for Alstom Transport in Australia, said: “This project has a challenging timeframe but is very important for Melbourne’s rail network.

“Alstom is committed to delivering a seamless and fluid programme for MTM that is designed to ensure maximum availability of the fleet during the installation phase and a more reliable and safer network following the installation.”
