Aurizon appoints contractor to build new train support facility

Leighton Contractors is to construct a new operations and maintenance site in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley for freight operator Aurizon.

The $100 million facility in Hexham will oversee the operator’s coal haulage fleet in the region, providing routine maintenance and servicing.

Leighton said the site would also include “shunting and temporary stabling areas which will alleviate local rail network capacity pressures”.

The contract, which is set to be completed by March 2015, also covers all of the signalling and power infrastructure, 26 points and 11 kilometres of plain line track works.

Leighton Contractors managing director Craig Laslett said: “This project will improve operations and supply chain efficiency for our client and deliver wider benefits across the Hunter Valley coal freight network.

“Our team integrates civil, track, electrical and signalling specialists who have extensive experience in the Hunter Valley.

“The project will also draw on Leighton Contractors’ strong history of delivering rail and mine infrastructure for clients in and servicing the resources sector.”
