SBB implements new energy management and control systems

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has completed the installation of a new energy management (EMS) and traction power (FSL) systems worth in the region of CHF 37 million.

SBB said the new systems will ensure a reliable power supply for the future of Switzerland’s electrified rail network.

The EMS, which controls and monitors energy production and transmission to the network, and FSL, which controls and monitors the overhead lines, were phased in throughout 2013 to replace the outmoded systems already in place.

A new purpose-built control center in Zollikofen will operate the EMS system, while the FSL system is spread across four different SBB operating centers.

One-hundred per cent of the energy used by Switzerland’s electrified network comes from Hydropower.
