Vienna outlines vision for metro expansion

Vienna City Council has unveiled its investment package for the city’s metro system over the course of the next 10 years.

Wiener Linien’s urban rail network is set to grow significantly in the next decade as work is completed on the U2 line extension and U5 metro line. Further investment will see the city’s tram system length increase by around 18 kilometres.

The U2 extension south will create new connections at Neubaugasse (U3) and Pilgramgasse (U4) to the S-Bahn station Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The line U2 section between Rathaus and Karlsplatz will become part of the new line U5, which extends north to Elterleinplatz.

The city council expects both new lines to be opened by the end of 2023.

Further improvements will include extensions of tram lines 0, to Nordbahnhof-Gelände, 67, to Monte Laa, and 25 to the U2 line station Aspern Nord.
