Komatsu Rail Rascal
The compact rounded tail end makes the Rail Rascal ideal for carrying out work in confined spaces, reducing the chances of rear collisions, the operator can focus on the task at hand.
Komatsu Rail Rascal
The Komatsu PW138MR-11 is a versatile, mid-sized wheel excavator designed for both road and rail applications. Fitted with a EU Stage V engine. The Rail Rascal is productive and efficient with its ultra-low emissions and comes with quick maintenance features where the oil filter, oil dipstick, coolant reserve tank, fuel filter and air cleaner are all within easy reach. In addition to the rail axles, we've integrated an RCI system to ensure the machine works to the maximum of its capabilities which ensures the operator is safe whilst working. Its compact size makes the Rail Rascal a preferred choice when working in confined spaces, due to its 3 steering modes including crab and 4-wheel steer. Its offset boom capabilities also allow it to undertake drainage excavation works on the railway.

Machine Applications for the Rail Rascal
The Rail Rascal is a compact, highly manoeuvrable Road‑Rail Vehicle designed to deliver exceptional versatility across rail maintenance, inspection, and construction environments. Its lightweight design, rapid deployment capability, and compatibility with a wide range of attachments make it an ideal solution for worksites requiring agility, precision, and reliable on‑track performance.
Rail Maintenance & Inspection Operations
The Rail Rascal is engineered for fast, efficient support across day‑to‑day rail maintenance tasks. Its compact footprint allows it to operate in confined areas where larger RRVs cannot access.
Key applications include:
- Track inspection — Ideal for visual checks, fault identification, and rapid response assessments.
- Light maintenance tasks — Supporting small‑scale repairs, bolt tightening, component adjustments, and lineside works.
- Vegetation control — When paired with cutting or brushing attachments.
- Drainage and culvert access — Perfect for navigating tight or restricted areas.
Its ability to mobilise quickly makes it a valuable asset for maintenance teams working across multiple locations in a single shift.
Construction & Support Applications
Despite its compact size, the Rail Rascal provides impressive capability for construction support tasks:
- Material transport — Moving tools, components, and consumables along the track.
- Site preparation — Assisting with clearing, levelling, and small excavation tasks when equipped with the appropriate attachments.
- Utility installation — Supporting cable laying, duct installation, and minor civil works.
- Access support — Providing a stable platform for personnel working on lineside structures.
Its agility makes it ideal for construction sites where space is limited or where larger machines would disrupt operations.
Specialist Road‑Rail (RRV) Operations
The Rail Rascal is designed for seamless road‑to‑rail transition, enabling rapid deployment and flexible movement along the track.
Specialist applications include:
- RRV rapid response — Quickly reaching fault locations or emergency worksites.
- Confined‑space operation — Navigating tunnels, narrow corridors, and restricted access zones.
- Precision positioning — Ideal for tasks requiring fine control and accurate placement.
- Support for larger RRVs — Transporting tools, assisting with setup, and providing supplementary capability.
Its lightweight design reduces track loading, making it suitable for sensitive infrastructure or temporary worksites.
Attachment Compatibility & Multi‑Function Use
The Rail Rascal supports a wide range of attachments, enabling it to adapt to multiple operational roles:
- Hydraulic tools — Breakers, cutters, and compact work tools.
- Brushes and vegetation heads — For lineside clearance and brushing.
- Material handling attachments — Small grabs, clamps, and lifting aids.
- Inspection equipment — Cameras, sensors, and measurement tools.
This versatility allows the Rail Rascal to switch roles quickly, improving productivity across multi‑discipline rail projects.
Digital & Operational Integration
The Rail Rascal can be integrated with modern fleet and operational systems to enhance oversight and efficiency:
- GPS tracking — Real‑time location monitoring across the rail network.
- Geo‑fencing — Controlled operational zones for safety and compliance.
- Telematics — Monitoring performance, utilisation, and maintenance needs.
- Shift‑based deployment — Ideal for maintenance and construction shifts requiring flexible support.
These features help operators maintain visibility, improve safety, and optimise machine utilisation.
